SMEEB 2020 conference will be held in Venice, September 21-24, 2020, at the European Center of Living Technology (ECLT).The aim of the workshop is to bring together scientists with different backgrounds (mathematics, biology, physics and computing) interested in microbial ecology and evolutionary biology (both theory and experiments). We will discuss important and recent research topics in these areas as well as methods and ideas.Topics will include stochastic population dynamics, quantitative and systemic biology, community ecology of microbes, statistical mechanics models in ecology, evolution in microbial communities, biodiversity coexistence and species interactions. Affective computing works mostly under a vision of emotions based on a functionalist conception of the mind in which emotions, as any other mental state, are understood as functional relations of information processing. The way in which these functional relations are achieved, whether through neuronal activity and organization or by artificial computer programming, is irrelevant to what emotions essentially are. These ideas are in stark contrast to the positions of embodied cognitive science, especially those emerging from the 4E approach to cognition (Embodied, Ecological, Embedded, Enactive), to which, in general, affectivity is seen as constitutive to cognition and cognition is always embodied.
In this workshop we discuss how relevant is embodiment for the synthesis of affectivity based in AI or other forms of implementation. The workshop is open to the widest possible disciplinary audience to tackle both the theoretical and philosophical aspects of synthetic affectivity, and how this is relevant for real-world implementations. We believe that this discussion is not only relevant in terms of advancing technology –which is exciting all by itself–, but it is a great opportunity to put the embodiment of emotions and affectivity in sharper relief by considering if and how this affective life can be shared with synthetic systems or even artificially implemented. We thus propose a dialogue in which the AI concern with artificial affectivity and the embodied methodologies of ALife can meet.
Complexity, understood as the emergence of new macro properties from the interactions of basic components, is a pervasive characteristic in natural, artificial and social systems. The Conference on Complex Systems (CCS) is the biggest and most important annual meeting of the international complex systems community. It comes under the auspices of the Complex Systems Society. This edition, after successful events in Singapore , Thessaloniki (Greece) , Cancun (Mexico) and Amsterdam (Netherlands), will take place in the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Spain, organized by IFISC (CSIC-UIB).

In the last decade, network theory has been revealed to be a perfect instrument to model the structure of complex systems and the dynamical process they are involved into. The wide variety of applications to social sciences, technological networks, biology, transportation and economic, to cite just only some of them, showed that network theory is suitable to provide new insights into many problems.
Given the success of the Sixth Edition in 2019 of the Mediterranean School of Complex Networks, we call for applications to the Seventh Edition in 2020.
The International Conference on Complex Systems is a unique interdisciplinary forum that unifies and bridges the traditional domains of science and a multitude of real world systems. Participants will contribute and be exposed to mind expanding concepts and methods from across the diverse field of complex systems science. The conference will be held July 26-31, 2020, in Nashua, NH, USA.
