  2. Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips, Science Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: The advent of the Internet, with sophisticated algorithmic search engines, has made accessing information as easy as lifting a finger. No longer do we have to make costly efforts to find the things we want. We can "Google" the old classmate, find articles online, or look up the actor who was on the tip of our tongue. The results of four studies suggest that when faced with difficult questions, people are primed to think about computers and that when people expect to have future access to information, they have lower rates of recall of the information itself and enhanced recall instead for where to access it. The Internet has become a primary form of external or transactive memory, where information is stored collectively outside ourselves.

  3. Statistical Laws Governing Fluctuations in Word Use from Word Birth to Word Death, arXiv Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: How often a given word is used, relative to other words, can convey information about the word's linguistic utility. Using Google word data for 3 languages over the 209-year period 1800-2008, we found by analyzing word use an anomalous recent change in the birth and death rates of words, which indicates a shift towards increased levels of competition between words as a result of new standardization technology. We demonstrate unexpected analogies between the growth dynamics of word use and the growth dynamics of economic institutions. Our results support the intriguing concept that a language's lexicon is a generic arena for competition which evolves according to selection laws that are related to social, technological, and political trends. Specifically, the aggregate properties of language show pronounced differences during periods of world conflict, e.g. World War II.

  4. A Common Scaling Rule for Abundance, Energetics, and Production of Parasitic and Free-Living Species, Science Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: The metabolic theory of ecology uses the scaling of metabolism with body size and temperature to explain the causes and consequences of species abundance. However, the theory and its empirical tests have never simultaneously examined parasites alongside free-living species. This is unfortunate because parasites represent at least half of species diversity. We show that metabolic scaling theory could not account for the abundance of parasitic or free-living species in three estuarine food webs until accounting for trophic dynamics. Analyses then revealed that the abundance of all species uniformly scaled with body mass to the "¾ power. This result indicates “production equivalence,” where biomass production within trophic levels is invariant of body size across all species and functional groups: invertebrate or vertebrate, ectothermic or endothermic, and free-living or parasitic.

    Excerpt: Graph theory was initiated by Euler in the eighteenth century. In mathematics, graph theory con- solidated itself in the following decades and centuries. However, it was only a little more than a decade ago that an explosion of research and applications occurred, in what is now referred to as network science. In particular, networks have become a central tool in the study of complex systems. The language of nodes and edges provided by networks has proven to be very illustrative of model elements of a system (nodes) and their interactions (edges). Having a language that describes interactions is essential for a non-reductionist science.

  7. Structural and Dynamical Patterns on Online Social Networks: the Spanish May 15th Movement as a case study, arXiv Bookmark and Share

    Excerpt: The number of people using online social networks in their everyday life is continuously growing at a pace never saw before. This new kind of communication has an enormous impact on opinions, cultural trends, information spreading and even in the commercial success of new products. More importantly, social online networks have revealed as a fundamental organizing mechanism in recent country-wide social movements. In this paper, we provide a quantitative analysis of the structural and dynamical patterns emerging from the activity of an online social network around the ongoing May 15th (15M) movement in Spain.

    Excerpt: Many real world situations (potluck dinners, academic departments, sports teams, corporate divisions, committees, seminar classes, etc.) involve actors adjusting their contributions in order to achieve a mutually satisfactory group goal, a win-win result. However, the majority of human group research has involved situations where groups perform poorly because task constraints promote either individual maximization behavior or diffusion of responsibility, and even successful tasks generally involve the propagation of one correct solution through a group.   9. Early warning signals for critical transitions: A generalized modeling approach, arXiv Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: Critical transitions are sudden, often irreversible, changes that can occur in a large variety of complex systems. Signals that warn of critical transitions are highly desirable, but their construction can be impeded by limited availability of data. We propose a method that can significantly reduce the amount of time series data required for a robust early warning signal by using other information about the system. This information is integrated through the framework of a generalized model. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach through several examples, including a previously published fisheries model.

  10. Emergence of hierarchical networks and polysynchronous behaviour in simple adaptive systems, arXiv Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: We describe the dynamics of a simple adaptive network. The network architecture evolves to a number of disconnected components on which the dynamics is characterized by the possibility of differently synchronized nodes within the same network (polysynchronous states). These systems may have implications for the evolutionary emergence of polysynchrony and hierarchical networks in physical or biological systems modeled by adaptive networks.

    In this essay, we briefly survey the contemporary scientific and philosophical debates on emergence and conclude that this notion has become a dilemma. We argue that the reason for this dilemma is metaphysical. Subsequently, we investigate some fundamental philosophical methods in science, such as Cartesian reduction and objectivism, as the main sources of scientific drawbacks. Eventually, we suggest some refinements in philosophical methods for improvement of scientific insight and propose the method of transcendentionism as a metaphysical panacea to encounter the dilemma of emergence

      Excerpt: This paper introduces Deleuze’s philosophy of becoming in system theoretic terms and proposes an alternative ontological foundation to the study of systems and complex systems in particular. A brief critique of system theory and difficulties apparent in it is proposed as an initial motivation to the discussion. Following is an overview aiming to provide an access to the ‘big picture’ of Deleuze’s revolutionary philosophical system with emphasize on a system theoretic approach and terminology.     Excerpt: Here, building on the richness of DNA computing and strand displacement circuitry, we show how molecular systems can exhibit autonomous brain-like behaviours. Using a simple DNA gate architecture that allows experimental scale-up of multilayer digital circuits, we systematically transform arbitrary linear threshold circuits (an artificial neural network model) into DNA strand displacement cascades that function as small neural networks.

  14. Speed of complex network synchronization, Eur. Phys. J. B Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: Synchrony is one of the most common dynamical states emerging on networks. The speed of convergence towards synchrony provides a fundamental collective time scale for synchronizing systems. Here we study the asymptotic synchronization times for directed networks with topologies ranging from completely ordered, grid-like, to completely disordered, random, including intermediate, partially disordered topologies. We extend the approach of master stability functions to quantify synchronization times. We find that the synchronization times strongly and systematically depend on the network topology. In particular, at fixed in-degree, stronger topological randomness induces faster synchronization, whereas at fixed path length, synchronization is slowest for intermediate randomness in the small-world regime. Randomly rewiring real-world neural, social and transport networks confirms this picture.

  15. Influence and Dynamic Behavior in Random Boolean Networks, arXiv Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: We present a rigorous mathematical framework for analyzing dynamics of a broad class of Boolean network models. We use this framework to provide the first formal proof of many of the standard critical transition results in Boolean network analysis, and offer analogous characterizations for novel classes of random Boolean networks. We precisely connect the short-run dynamic behavior of a Boolean network to the average influence of the transfer functions. We show that some of the assumptions traditionally made in the more common mean-field analysis of Boolean networks do not hold in general. For example, we offer some evidence that imbalance, or expected internal inhomogeneity, of transfer functions is a crucial feature that tends to drive quiescent behavior far more strongly than previously observed.

  16. Detecting evolving patterns of self-organizing networks by flow hierarchy measurement, Complexity Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: Hierarchies occur widely in evolving self-organizing ecological, biological, technological, and social networks, but detecting and comparing hierarchies is difficult. Here we present a metric and technique to quantitatively assess the extent to which self-organizing directed networks exhibit a flow hierarchy. Flow hierarchy is a commonly observed but theoretically overlooked form of hierarchy in networks. We show that the ecological, neurobiological, economic, and information processing networks are generally more hierarchical than their comparable random networks. We further discovered that hierarchy degree has increased over the course of the evolution of Linux kernels. Taken together, our results suggest that hierarchy is a central organizing feature of real-world evolving networks, and the measurement of hierarchy opens the way to understand the structural regimes and evolutionary patterns of self-organizing networks. Our measurement technique makes it possible to objectively compare hierarchies of different networks and of different evolutionary stages of a single network, and compare evolving patterns of different networks. It can be applied to various complex systems, which can be represented as directed networks.

  17. Explosive Percolation Is Continuous, Science Bookmark and Share

    Abstract: “Explosive percolation” is said to occur in an evolving network when a macroscopic connected component emerges in a number of steps that is much smaller than the system size. Recent predictions based on simulations suggested that certain Achlioptas processes (much-studied local modifications of the classical mean-field growth model of Erdős and Rényi) exhibit this phenomenon, undergoing a phase transition that is discontinuous in the scaling limit. We show that, in fact, all Achlioptas processes have continuous phase transitions, although related models in which the number of nodes sampled may grow with the network size can indeed exhibit explosive percolation.

      This book discusses how networking influences decision making. The individual lectures interconnect psychological testing, the modeling of neuron networks and brain dynamics to the transport of information within and between complex networks. Of particular importance was the introduction of a new principle that governs how complex networks talk to one another - the Principle of Complexity Management (PCM). PCM establishes that the transfer of information from a stimulating complex network to a responding complex network is determined by how the complexity indices of the two networks are related.
