New proteins Linked to Muscle, Degenerative Ills, Reuters AlertNet
Using a new technique to sort through the tens of thousands of proteins made by the human body, researchers said on Thursday they had identified 62 new proteins and linked 23 of them with muscle-wasting and degenerative diseases.(...) The common wisdom used to be that one gene coded for one protein, but recent research makes it clear that the body in fact mixes and matches smaller components of proteins called amino acids. Cells use proteins to perform their various functions, and defective proteins often lead to disease. Many rare but devastating diseases have been linked to the inner part of the nuclear membrane of the cell.
